****CLUBHOUSE OPENS - Unofficially*****
(posted 18-08-2008)

|
At long last, the Club has something to celebrate. The new Clubhouse has been handed over to the Club by the builders. It has already been used by Members and visitors for the weekend just gone as shelter from the rain! Although it has not been fully fitted out with furniture yet, there are already a few tables and chairs out for use inside the building. There will be a formal opening in the near future when all of the Members and Townsfolk who have supported the Fire Appeal so generously will be invited down to the Ground to see the new building in its glory and what their efforts have achieved. The exact date and format is being discussed by the General Committee. Members and interested parties will be kept informed.
Over the next days, there will be more furniture put out and the Clubhouse will become more homely. The bar itself will be up and running later this week as the bar area and cold store are being prepared and stocked to serve some refreshments and beverages!
Although the kitchen area is still to be completed, it is fabulous news that Members and supporters have been able to use the new building. Pictures and replacement memorabilia to replace items that were destroyed in the December 2006 arson attack are yet to be put out but over the coming days there will be great efforts being made to turn the new building from a shell into a proper Clubhouse.
Roger Mortimore, the Club Secretary, who has fronted the Club's Fire Appeal, said:
"I am so pleased that the new building has been completed and handed over to the Club. I am thankful and indebted to everyone who has supported the Appeal. When the building is officially opened, it will be a proud moment in the Club's history. It could not have been possible except for the generosity and support of Members, supporters and the Townsfolk. It is the start of a new chapter for the Club and something to smile about".

Kenilworth completed an unbeaten Bank Holiday weekend with a 20 point victory at lowly Old Edwardians. Old Edwardians won the toss and elected to bat first on a damp wicket that was only ever going to deteriorate as the match progressed. Only 23 from opener Mohammed Atlaf prevented Old Edwardians from an even worse score as they limped to 75 all out off 27 overs. Charlie Leonard claimed the opening wicket to finish 1-18 and Gregg Peebles the final wicket 1-16 overall but in between was a magnificent spell of spin bowling from Geoff Edmunds who collected his second 5 wicket haul of the Bank Holiday weekend with a magnificent 8-36 off 13 overs. In reply, Kenilworth found life equally difficult on the track and slumped to 48-4 before Gregg Peebles 10* and Adrian Sellar 14* took Kenilworth to victory to ensure their dreams of Birmingham League cricket next season as they finished on 76-4. For Old Edwardians, Hussian took 3-11 and Tony Ingram 1-11. With 3 League matches of the season remaining, the Town are in 4th place, 11 points behind leaders Fillongley who are on 268 points, followed by Nuneaton in 2nd place with 258. Moseley Ashfield are on 257 points in 3rd. Kenilworth also on 257 in 4th place followed by Southam on 243 points in 5th and King's Heath 235 points in 6th. The title will be won by one of these 6 teams in what is proving to be one of the closest run ins of the Leagues history in recent years. The Town's fate will be decided with three tough games against Moseley Ashfield bext week followed by Southam the following week before the last game of the campaign against current leaders, Fillongley.

Kenilworth kept their title hopes alive with a winning draw at home to Solihull Blossomfield. Kenilworth were ask to bat first and made a competitive 218-6 from their 50 overs. There were contributions throughout the order with James Nason a patient 40 off 89 balls opening the innings and Gregg Peebles 38 off 31 balls top scored but there were also vital contributions from other opener Mark Wisdish who continued his fine recent form with the bat to make 36 and Adie Sellar who made 36 and contributed to a useful 7th wicket partnership of 56 with keeper, Mike Watts, to take Kenilworth to their final total. The wickets were shared around with Nick Lewis 2-45 , Suleman Muhmand 2-28 and Rob Edmond 2-46.In reply, Solihull Blossomfield appeared well place at 115-3 thanks to Warwickshire Under 17 player, Rob Edmond, who top scored with 41 and Ed Harris and keeper Sheraz Khan who both made 36 but a middle order collapse thanks to an almost unbroken bowling spell from Geoff Edmunds who ended with 6-32 and Charlie Leonard 2-41 but Blossomfield last wicket pair kept out the final 5 overs to ensure they took 5 points to Kenilworth's 18 as they ended on 138-9.

The Town 1’s maintained their title challenge with a 20 point 3 wicket win at North Warwickshire after bowling the hosts out for 151 to leave them 11 points behind leaders Southam. Charlie Leonard, who went onto claim 2-32, took a wicket first ball of the match and then fellow opener, Mitch Lowe, snapped up a wicket with his first delivery as North Warwickshire slumped to 2-2 inside 2 overs. Lowe continued his fiery pace to end the day on 3-40, whilst Geoff Edmunds bagged 4-50 - thanks to 2 smart catches and a stumping from in form keeper, Mike Watts, whilst Gregg Peebles claimed the other wicket to fall. North Warwickshire had slumped to 27-5 before Daniel Wicks made 38, numbers 8 and 9 Paul Dainty with 40 and Paul Webb with 26 brought the score to some sort of respectability. In reply, Mark Wisdish notched up 39 from the opening spot and Mitch Lowe made 22 but it was Peebles who had the match winning performance with an unbeaten 49 slamming 8 boundaries and a six to give the Town a comfortable win as they reached 152-7 inside 37 overs.

The Town 1's enjoyed their first victory in almost a month with a 3 wicket victory over Bedworth at the Miners' Welfare Park to keep the side in the title chase that now sees, with 7 matches remaining, 6 teams within only 7 points of each other as they all hunt to claim the Birmingham Premier Cricket League spot for 2009. Bedworth were asked to bat first on a damp pitch following the covers being left off after a match the previous evening and an early morning rain shower. They slumped to 25-3 with Charlie Leonard claiming all 3 wickets helped by 2 short leg catches from Dave Edmunds. Bedworth recovered thanks to an 80 runs partnership off 113 balls between Sean Hirons who finished on 63 off 72 balls with 10 x 4 and Heath Parnell who was last man out for 77 off 130 balls. The rest of the batsmen struggled against the Town attack as Geoff Edmunds claimed his 3rd 5 wicket haul of the season with a fine 5-46 whilst Charlie Leonard 3-61 and Pete Alty chipped in with 2-23 as Bedworth made 185-10. In reply, Kenilworth slumped from 73-2 to 88-5 as the middle order failed but a 69 partnership between Adrian Sellar and Joe Courts took Kenilworth to brink of victory. However, the game wasn’t over as Sellar was forced to retire hurt on 55 off 86 balls with 7 x 4 after being struck in the grill from a short ball from Faisal Raiz in the fading light. Geoff Edmunds then went first ball but Joe Courts kept his nerve to hit the winning boundary off Scott Friswell as they reached 189-7 with 1 over to spare to give Kenilworth a much needed 20 points to Bedworth's 6 and keep the Premier Division title race wide open. For Bedworth, Nigel Camwell took 4-57 , Faisal Riaz 2-39 and Heath Parnell 1-39.

In an exciting game at Warwick Road which could have swung either way The Town 1s claimed a winning draw and 17 points. On winning the toss, skipper Geoff Edmunds had no hesitation in making first use of a fine batting surface and the decision look to be justified as Kenilworth amassed 245-5 in 50 overs. Opener Mark Wisdish showed some fine form as he batted through almost the entire innings to make 91 off 146 balls with 11 x 4 , Dave Edmunds provided valuable support with 51 off 56 balls with 4 x 4 and 3 x 6 before Charlie Leonard and Gregg Peebles with some lusty hitting and scampering between the wickets took Kenilworth up to their final total. In reply, Atherstone were reduced to 40-2 and 75-4 as Leonard claimed all 4 wickets of the top order including dangermen Matt Pickering 36 off 29 balls and wicketkeeper Luke Reeves 43 off 36. With Atherstone 140-6 after 25 overs gone the game was in the balance and Atherstone then looked favourites as a fine 101 partnership between Alan Millar 36 and Mark Hennesey 73 off 74 balls with 7 x 4 took them to the brink off victory but some final tight overs from Geoff Edmunds and Greg Peebles ensure Atherstone finished just short on 241-7. Charlie Leonard led the town attack with 4-74 and Geoff Edmunds took 3-76 as Pickering was out off the final ball of the innings to give Kenilworth an extra bowling point in a most entertaining match.

The Town 1's slipped to their 2nd defeat in as many weeks with a 21 run defeat at Nuneaton . In a low scoring encounter at Weddington Road skipper Geoff Edmunds won the toss and had no hesitation in making first use of a green wicket on which both sides struggled with the conditions. Only 36 from opener James Taplin was any score of note for Nuneaton as they made only 100 all out. Geoff Edmunds bowled an incredible 18 over spell to be reward with 8-23. Other wicket takers were Charlie Leonard 1-44 and Tom Kane 1-11. In reply, the Town found the track even more unplayable and they slumped to 24-5 before a 24 run partnership between Mark Deeley and Charlie Leonard left the game in the balance but once they were both out Jason Dean and Dean Hopkins tore through the lower middle order to finish with figures of 4-30 and 6-38 respectively and leave Kenilworth 79 all out, despite a creditable rear guard by number 10, Tom Anscombe with 10 not out but his efforts were in vain. The defeat leaves the Town with plenty of work to be done if they are to push for the league title.

OUT-of-sorts Kenilworth slipped to there first defeat of the League season when they fell to a disappointing seven wicket Warwickshire League Premier Division defeat against Handsworth at Warwick Road on Saturday. It leaves them in 4th place but 20 points behind new leader, Moseley Ashfield, as the second half of the season gets underway.
Losing wickets at regular intervals did not help the hosts’ cause as they were restricted to 161 for 9 in their 50 overs.
Opener James Nason top scored with 43, while support down the order came from Adrian Sellar 38 and Mike Watts 30 but Ernie Ramsey 4-49 and Jagdish Patel 3-47 put the visitors in control.
Handsworth survived a couple of early scares before cruising to 162 for 3 in the 37th over thanks to the efforts of Carby Dawkins 78no and keeper Renrick Hooper 28. Skipper Geoff Edmunds 2-33 and fellow slow bowler Nason 1-46 were the wicket-takers.

Rain ruined the chance for a positive result as Kenilworth slipped to 3rd place in the Warwickshire League Premier Division after having to settle for a draw at home to Fillongley at Warwick Road when the match was interestingly poised for both sides.
Batting first, the Town 1’s accrued 161-9 from their 50 overs. An opening partnership of 84 between James Nason 39 and Mark Wisdish 41 in 28 overs should have set Kenilworth up for a larger total but fine bowling from Steve Gardner who took 4-51 from 19 overs and Ian Webster 3-26 from 11 saw Kenilworth slip from 103-3 to end on a perhaps disappointing 161-9.
In reply, after a couple of short rain interruptions Fillongley were left with 49 overs to reach their winning total. The Town 1’s got off to the best possible start with Mitch Lowe having opener Chris Hill caught behind in the 3rd over. The score progressed to 51 before Gregg Peebles had Chris Moore trapped in front.Worse was to follow as Tom Nightingale was
run out by a stunning direct hit from Charlie Leonard and skipper Phil Hammond quickly followed caught behind first ball after an excellent catch from keeper Mick Watts off seamer Mitch Lowe as the visitors lost two wickets in two balls. However, an unbeaten 5th wicket 41 run partnership between Andrew Carty 34 not out and Andrew Pell 22 not out left Fillongley on 112-4 after 26 overs before the rain ended the day for all.

KENILWORTH lost top spot in the Warwickshire League Premier Division
after being forced to hang on for a draw in a high-scoring clash at
neighbours Southam who moved into pole position.
Southam skipper Dave Hawkes won the toss and had no hesitation in
batting first on a very flat pitch.
It proved a wise decision as Southam amassed a substantial 295 for 8
thanks largely to opener Chris Bramley who compiled a fine 128 off only
124 balls.
Valuable support was provided by Warwickshire under 17 player Dan
Vernon who hit a boundary-laden 53 and Hawkes 31.
Charlie Leonard toiled through 16 overs and was rewarded with figures
of 3-92, while Mitch Lowe 2-58, Gregg Peebles 1-37, Pete Alty 1-50 and
James Nason 1-48 were the other wicket-takers.
In reply Kenilworth made a brave chase but were happy to finish on 238
for 7 and take 11 points to Southam’s 17.
Dave Edmunds continued his recent good form by hitting 88 off 71 balls
and Lowe provided his usual fireworks by smashing 47 off only 20 balls,
which included three fours and five 6s.
Vernon completed a fine all round performance by snapping up 4-66 which
helped lift Southam one point clear of Kenilworth at the top of the
table.
