KENILWORTH CRICKET CLUB began warming up for the new Warwickshire League Premier Division season with a four wicket victory in their traditional season's opener at Harborne on Easter Sunday. The Birmingham League hosts had first use of a perfect wicket but were kept in check by fine spells of bowling from Charlie Leonard and Gregg Peebles.
The introduction of Lewis Phillips resulted in the Club's first wicket of the season, while a superb piece of fielding from Leonard saw danger man Darren Franklin run out cheaply.
Harborne had slumped to 107 for 6 but a late flurry from Tim Clay 27 and Dan Rulte 19, allied to 27 extras, boosted the total to 175 for 9 in 40 overs.
The Town's paceman, Mitch Lowe with a fine 3-12, Phillips 2-32 and wily left arm spinner, Geoff Edmunds, who claimed 2-34, were the most successful Town bowlers.
Kenilworth lost early wickets slumping to 20 for 2 in reply but the side recovered after David Edmunds steadied the ship to hit 38. Club newcomer, Lee Melville, made a very solid and impressive match winning 74 not out with Leonard 15 not out as they shared in an unbeaten 6th wicket partnership to steer the Town to their target with four wickets and three balls to spare to kick off the 2009 season with a fine victory.
