Sat 3rd XI Versus Southam 6/13/2009
The 3rds won an exiting encounter against neighbours Southam by 21 runs. Batting first, the Town reached 188 after 17 year old Guy Pearson had made 45 and skipper Nigel Thompson 43 but it was a crucial 9th wicket 39 run partnership between Colin Goodall 27* and Indy Matharu 23 that made the difference. Ralph took 3-78 for the hosts, Jones and Darby 2 wickets a piece whilst Muglesdon, Preston and Newport each chipped in with a wicket. Southam got off to a flyer chasing as they put on 63 in the first 6 overs as Newport blasted 49. However, the introduction of the "spin twins" Andy Smith and Roger Kelsey slowed the Southam innings down as they picked up wickets. Smith bowled a marathon 20 over spell to take 5-38 and Kelsey's 12 overs were rewarded with 4-36. Ed Smith took 1-31 whilst 15 year old Pat Howard took a stunning overhead one handed catch from S. Muglesdon 24 as Southam ended on 167 when nearly stealing victory.
